*Pant* Meow. That little red thing has had me running after it all day! I know I’ll catch it one of these days.
Until then, let me tell you all about the PetSafe Bolt Laser Cat Toy, one of my Meowmy’s favorite items.
Automatic play mode
When Meowmy first brought home the Petsafe bolt interactive laser cat toy, I wasn’t sure what to think about it. Of course, I’m not sure what to think about most new things.
She took it out of the box, put it on a shelf, and hit the button. I noticed a strange whirring noise it made; then, I noticed something else. A little red bug was flying all over the place! No way was I going to allow that. No bugs allowed in my house!
I chased after it with all the energy I had but couldn’t get it, all while Meowmy and her boyfriend went about their day. How could they not notice what was happening! Humans are so unobservant sometimes.
When they are about to leave the house for a while, the little red bug comes back. I do my best to catch it, and eventually, it disappears. At least they don’t have to worry about the r4ed bug when they get home.
Manual play mode
Sometimes I see Meowmy or her boyfriend pick up the Petsafe bolt interactive laser cat toy and push the button, but there’s no whirring noise. The little red bug also seems to move differently, a little slower and with purpose.
At these times, the humans notice the little red bug, and they seem happy about it. So I chase after it with even more ferocity to show them how good of a hunter I am!
How to use the PetSafe bolt interactive laser cat toy
To use this toy simply push the button on the back of the toy once and place it somewhere where it won’t get knocked off by your cats. Adjust the inner mirror to aim the laser higher or lower depending on the size of the room and whether your cats prefer to chase or jump after prey. I like to jump so having this aimed high on a wall is best for me.
Make sure this toy is pointed in a way that the laser will not shine in anyone’s eyes and won’t cause your cats to run into anything breakable.
To use manual mode, hold the on button for a second or two and you should see the laser rotate then stop in place. From here just hold the toy and aim the laser wherever you want it to go, manually adjusting the mirror to change the angle.

This is also great for cat owners who need to distract their energetic cats for short periods of time.
For those with cats who prefer to chase things on the floor, such as my sister Melody, an automatic ball such as the YOFUN Smart Interactive Cat Toy might be a better choice.

I’m giving the Petsafe bolt interactive laser cat toy a 4 out of 5 stars.
While the Petsafe bolt interactive laser cat toy has some great features, not everyone loves this item. I agree with some reviewers who feel the movement of the laser is not random enough, and it’s too fast.
When Meowmy first brought this toy home for us and turned it on, it was too fast for us to follow and after only a few seconds we had lost the little red bug, giving up on the hunt. Over time we have gotten faster and have no trouble keeping up with this laser toy.
However, most people and cats enjoy the Petsafe bolt interactive laser cat toy as we do.
This device is also very durable and has withstood several falls. We cats, as graceful as we are can be very clumsy, especially when our adrenaline is going.
What I like about the Petsafe bolt
I like that this toy can be used in auto or manual mode. I also like that it does not burn through batteries quickly and automatically turns itself off.
What I don’t like about the Petsafe bolt
I do not like that this toy has a short-timer. While fifteen minutes is a good amount of time for short play sessions it is not enough when I have the energy for more.
The patterns are not as random as the manufacturer claims. The laser also moves much faster than some cats can keep up with and the mirror only really provides two angles.

As with any other product or toy, this item will not be suitable for every cat. If you have a cat, like myself, who is very active and loves moving quickly, this will be perfect for them. If you don’t always have the time to play with your kitty, the Petsafe bolt interactive laser cat toy may be the purrfect item for you.
